How does insurance work for cataract surgery?

Base cataract surgery with a standard monofocal lens is covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans. You are responsible only for your applicable deductible and copay — our team handles all billing and pre-authorization on your behalf.

Premium lens upgrades — Stratus Precision, Clarity, Freedom, and Bespoke — involve an out-of-pocket professional fee for the lens and laser component. The surgical procedure itself remains billable to your insurance. Our surgical coordinator will contact your insurance provider before your surgery date, verify your benefits, and provide a written estimate of your expected out-of-pocket costs before you commit to anything.
We are in-network with Medicare and most major commercial insurance plans. If you have questions about your specific coverage, call us at 470-403-2020 and we'll find out for you.

Frequently asked questions about pricing and financing

Does insurance cover cataract surgery?

Arrow

Yes — base cataract surgery with a standard monofocal lens is covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans. You are responsible only for your applicable deductible and copay. Premium lens upgrades involve an additional out-of-pocket professional fee, while the surgical procedure component remains billable to your insurance.

What does the professional fee include?

Arrow

The professional fee covers Dr. Tran's surgical services — including the procedure itself and all standard post-operative visits. There are no hidden add-ons for follow-up care within the standard post-op period.

What is the ASC facility fee?

Arrow

The ASC facility fee is charged separately by the ambulatory surgery center where your procedure is performed. It covers the operating room, surgical equipment, nursing staff, and facility overhead on the day of surgery. This fee varies by facility and is separate from Dr. Tran's professional fee.

Why isn't the facility fee listed on this page?

Arrow

Because each ambulatory surgery center sets its own facility fees independently. Our surgical coordinator will contact your specific ASC, obtain the facility fee, and include it in your complete written estimate before you schedule anything. You will never be surprised by a number you haven't seen in advance.

Do you offer payment plans?

Arrow

Yes — Stratus Eye offers in-house interest-free payment plans directly through our practice. No third-party application, no credit check, no deferred interest. A 25% deposit is due at the time of surgical scheduling, with the remaining balance split into flexible monthly installments arranged personally with our surgical coordinator.

Why don't you use CareCredit?

Arrow

CareCredit's deferred interest model can cost patients significantly more than the original fee if the balance isn't paid in full within the promotional period. We made a deliberate decision to handle financing in-house so your payment plan is exactly what it says — interest-free, straightforward, and arranged directly with our team.

How much is the deposit to schedule surgery?

Arrow

25% of your total professional fee is due at the time of scheduling. For example, Stratus Freedom at $5,200 per eye would require a $1,300 deposit per eye to secure your surgical date. Your surgical coordinator will confirm the exact deposit amount at your consultation.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Arrow

Yes — cataract surgery and premium lens upgrades are qualified medical expenses eligible for payment with HSA and FSA funds. Using pre-tax dollars can meaningfully reduce your effective out-of-pocket cost. Confirm your specific plan's coverage with your benefits administrator.

What does a self-pay eye exam cost?

Arrow

Comprehensive eye exams are available at Stratus Eye for patients without surgical plans. Call 470-403-2020 for current pricing and availability. Most major vision insurance plans are also accepted for routine eye exams.

How do I know which package is right for my budget?

Arrow

Your consultation includes a one-on-one conversation with our surgical coordinator covering your lens options, complete cost estimate, insurance coverage, and payment plan options. Most patients leave with a clear financial picture and a plan they're comfortable with — before making any commitment. Call 470-403-2020 or schedule your evaluation to get started.
